This residence at 20 Prospect Ave., a treasured piece of history in Shelter Island Heights, is now on the market for $5.45 million.

Constructed in 1883, this distinguished residence is one of the 20 original homes in the area once known as “Divinity Hill.”

Back in the late 1800s, Methodist ministers from New York flocked to this picturesque enclave to worship at the Union Chapel in the Grove, and they built these charming homes without kitchens, relying instead on communal meals at the Chequit Inn or deliveries by donkey cart.

One of the standout features of 20 Prospect Ave. is its expansive porch, which served as a sleeping porch during sweltering summer nights long before the invention of air conditioning.

“Waterfront properties in Shelter Island Heights are rare. Typically, they are inherited and held by families for generations,” said Barry McGovern of Hedgerow Exclusive Properties, who is handling the listing.

The home, known as Aquarelle, spans 5,000 square feet and includes seven bedrooms and six bathrooms. It’s set on over 1.2 acres of prime land.

The current owners named it in homage to their acclaimed careers as watercolor artists, with every corner of the residence radiating creativity and inspiration. The lower level even offers a separate finished living space with abundant water views, a kitchenette and a bath, perfect for a guest apartment or home office.

“The late Olive Reich, a renowned watercolor artist, left her estate to her three children. They each already have homes on Shelter Island and are now ready to sell their mother’s beloved home. This is a true once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the discerning buyer,” McGovern added.

Designer Ford Hunford shared his excitement about the property, telling The Post, “The home overlooks the harbor in such a magical setting. There is tremendous inspiration for new ideas for this historical house. A very unique property.”
